Sometimes remediation requires sifting through a lot of old stuff

Remediation

Remediation is a term used in IT to describe a situation where fires need to be put out. It’s the all-hands-on-deck situation when an ounce of prevention is no longer enough, and now a pound of cure is needed.

It’s the IT equivalent of ecosystem collapse and will require some planning and innovative solutions to get your day-to-day activities back to an operational level

Much like bespoke software remediation is a process of taking a few steps back and looking at the whole. But this approach is more about clearing the field and making room for new solutions when the current situation is untenable and cannot be built upon.

  • Step 1: Indexation and identification

The first step is to identify where the most glaring issues are. This can be done by having a thorough look at all the systems in your company. Based on this investigation a plan can be made.

  • Step 2: Code Refactoring & Solution Implementation

Once a clear picture is established of what needs to be fixed to stop the fire, this can be implemented. Which often involves a software fix so day to day operations can continue.

  • Step 3: Testing and Delivery

Introduction remediation

Remediation is the IT equivalent of being carted into the emergency room of the hospital. It’s often not something looked forward to but it’s a life-saving thing, given the circumstances.  So we speak of “remediation” as opposed to “bespoke software” when the house has come down around you. It’s more akin to a first aid approach compared to the time when you bring in an architect to design an extension to your house.

While the old axiom “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is definitely true, sometimes you can’t escape a situation where you might just want to break down something to the foundation and sanitize it so you have a clean plot to build on again. Dashcoon can help you do this in a controlled and safe manner that will provide you with as little hindrance to daily operations as possible given the situation.

When and how does the need for remediation occur?

There is a myriad of ways in which the need for remediation can pop up and become relevant. Often with an alarming and rather unwelcome acuteness. But simply put; in almost all cases you find you have programmed yourself into a corner. And there is generally speaking no easy fix anymore and it’s time to start bringing down derelict buildings to make space to build something new, and sustainable again.

The need for remediation can materialize by hanging on to a system that is no longer supported by the party that developed it, and after a prolonged period of neglect, it has given up the ghost. Taking a lot of processes you rely on down with it. This can be because it has become incompatible with newer software patches of other systems for example. What can also happen in the ever-changing IT landscape is that the knowledge to fix something is no longer available to your company. or perhaps a project has gotten off the rails and has seriously derailed some of the systems that were in the process of being upgraded.

No one case is the same and each approach will need to be tailored to the situation.

The implications of a remediation process

Remediation is often a rather invasive procedure. The whole IT machine, with all its cogs and gears, has jammed or started disintegrating on one side, while the other is still trying to merely hum along as always.

Often affected or adjacent (in the sense that they rely on the affected system to perform their function.)  systems will have to be suspended and or replaced. Depending on the severity of the case. The general idea is to get back from a situation where basic functions have ceased to work, to a situation where the daily operations can continue and the playing field has been leveled out. Dashcoon will help you have as little downtime as humanly possible while we try to get rid of IT  debris and flotsam so you have a basic workable situation again in as short a time as possible.

A clear distinction to make here is that remediation is about solving the emergency, as opposed to bespoke software, which would be tailored software to enhance or secure a certain process. Sometimes, it’s recommended to have both in succession. Of course, Dashcoon can help you with both aspects.

Three phases of remediation

These are, generally speaking, the three phases of a successful remediation campaign.

Indexation and identification

First, we have to take stock of what is in play, what is important where the priorities lie and generally what is happening with the software and hardware situation the company that has caused the need for remediation to occur in the first place

Code Refactoring & Solution Implementation

After clarity has been established and it's clear how to proceed a fix will be implemented by the Dashcoon team to help you get back on your feet and back in business.

Testing and Delivery

Because there is never a standard solution for untangling a ball of yarn and knitting it back into some coherent IT tapestry. Upon delivery, we will stand by to monitor the fix. Quite often remediation is like a cyberspace equivalent of the game "wack a mole" and it requires some patience and diligence to get to absolute stability again.
